To choose the right locksmith in Brisbane, run seven checks before any work starts. Confirm they hold a current Queensland security equipment installer licence, have trade training, carry public liability insurance, and will give you a written quote. Then check their review history, make sure they handle your specific job, and confirm they can reach your suburb in a reasonable time.
Each of these checks takes a few minutes, and most can be done over the phone. At Solus Locksmith, we work across Greater Brisbane and the other five Australian capital cities, and we hold a 4.9-star Google review average. When new customers tell us about a bad experience with a previous locksmith, the cause is almost always a skipped licence check or a price that was never put in writing.
This guide explains each check, the Queensland rules behind it, and how the process changes when you’re locked out at night versus planning a lock upgrade.
Quick Checklist: What to Check Before Hiring a Locksmith in Brisbane
Run through this list before anyone works on your door, car or safe:
- Licence. Ask for their Queensland security licence number and check it on the Office of Fair Trading register.
- Training. Ask whether they have a trade qualification, such as a Certificate III in Locksmithing.
- Insurance. Confirm they carry public liability insurance.
- Written quote. Get the call-out fee, labour, parts and any after-hours rate in writing, even if it’s just a text.
- Reviews. Read reviews on more than one platform and look for a consistent pattern.
- Right specialty. Confirm they handle your exact job, whether that’s a house lockout, a car key or a master-key system.
- Coverage and response time. Check they service your suburb and ask for a realistic arrival window.
If a locksmith dodges any of these questions, take that as your answer and call someone else.
Do Locksmiths Need a Licence in Queensland?
Yes. Every locksmith who installs, repairs or services locks in Queensland must hold a current security licence under the Security Providers Act 1993. The licence is managed by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
The licence locksmiths need is the security equipment installer licence, a Class 2 security provider licence. According to the Queensland Government’s security equipment installer licence page, it covers locks for commercial and residential areas, as well as safes and vaults. The same page states: “You also need a licence when providing locksmith services to access someone’s vehicle for payment.”
To get a Class 2 security licence, applicants must be at least 18, consent to a criminal history check and provide fingerprints. A locksmith business that employs technicians may also need a separate security firm licence.
Which locksmith jobs need a licence in Queensland?
Most paid locksmith work requires a licence. The exemptions are narrow.
| Job | Licence required? |
| Changing or rekeying locks on a home or business | Yes |
| Repairing or replacing household locks (outside a building project) | Yes |
| Opening a locked car for payment | Yes |
| Installing or servicing safes and vaults | Yes |
| Installing access control or electronic locks | Yes |
| Cutting keys at a retail key-cutting counter | No |
| Fitting basic locks during construction, repair or renovation | No |
In practice, if someone is coming to your property to open, change or fit a lock and charge you for it, they should be licensed.
How to Check a Locksmith’s Licence in Queensland
You can check any security licence in Queensland for free. The OFT keeps a public register you can search through its check a security licence page.
Here’s how we suggest using it:
- Ask for the locksmith’s licence number when you call to book.
- Search the number or name on the OFT register.
- Confirm the licence is current, the name matches the person or business, and it includes the security equipment installer class.
- When the locksmith arrives, ask to see their licence card and check it matches.
The OFT’s register records each licence’s status (licensed, expired, refused, cancelled or suspended), number, class, expiry date and any conditions. A missing, expired or suspended licence is a clear reason to cancel the job.
The OFT gives the same advice. In its warning about dodgy locksmiths, it tells consumers to check the register, ask for licence details when booking and again on arrival, and cancel immediately if anything seems wrong.
Our Brisbane technicians bring their licence card to the door, and we read out licence numbers on request. A licensed locksmith expects this question.
Does a Licence Mean a Locksmith Is Properly Trained?
No. Queensland’s licence confirms a locksmith has passed criminal history and probity checks, but it doesn’t confirm trade skill. The Queensland Government states plainly: “You don’t need any training to hold this licence.”
Because the licence has no training requirement, ask about qualifications separately. The industry standard is the Certificate III in Locksmithing (MEM30819), completed through an apprenticeship. TAFE Queensland’s version of the course includes units on:
- Cutting keys by hand and to code
- Planning master key systems
- Gaining entry to and servicing safes
- Gaining entry to vehicles and programming transponder keys
- Installing door control devices and electronic security systems
Several of these units teach a locksmith to gain entry and then reinstate the lock so it still works. That skill matters most in a lockout, because a lock opened without damage doesn’t need replacing afterwards.
Is Master Locksmith’s membership worth looking for?
Master Locksmiths membership is a useful shortcut. The Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia requires business members to hold a current security licence in Queensland, carry $20 million in public liability cover, and have a Certificate III or IV security industry qualification (or equivalent trade test).
Membership is optional, so many good locksmiths aren’t members. When a locksmith is a member, an independent body has already checked their licence, insurance and qualifications.
Should a Brisbane Locksmith Have Public Liability Insurance?
Yes. Public liability insurance means the locksmith’s insurer pays if the job damages your property, such as a split door frame, a scratched car door or a badly fitted deadbolt.
Ask directly: “Do you carry public liability insurance, and what’s the cover amount?” For larger jobs, such as rekeying an office or fitting locks across a unit complex, ask for a copy of the certificate of currency. Any insured business can get this document from its insurer.
How to Get a Fair Locksmith Quote in Brisbane
Always get the price in writing before work starts. It can be a formal quote or a text message, as long as it lists every charge.
A complete quote should include:
- The call-out or service fee
- Labour, as a fixed price or hourly rate
- Parts, such as a new cylinder, deadbolt or key blank
- Any after-hours, weekend or public holiday rate
For planned work, compare written quotes from two or three licensed locksmiths. Look at the hardware they recommend as well as the price. For an emergency, ask for the price on the phone, then confirm it in writing before the technician starts.
At Solus Locksmith, one approach we’ve found works well is to assess the job on site, then give one fixed figure in writing that matches the final invoice. We price this way because surprise add-ons are the complaint we hear most often from customers who’ve used other operators. For typical price ranges, our locksmith cost guide shows how call-out fees and after-hours rates change the final bill. The figures are for Sydney, but Brisbane quotes are made up of the same fees.
A locksmith who won’t give any price before starting is a red flag.
How to Check a Locksmith’s Reviews and Reputation
Reviews show you how a locksmith behaves once the job is done. The written comments tell you more than the star rating.
- Check two or more platforms. Compare Google reviews with Facebook, ProductReview or a local directory.
- Look at the timeline. Steady reviews over months or years are a good sign. A cluster of near-identical five-star reviews in one week is not.
- Read the negative reviews. Watch for repeated complaints about overcharging, damaged doors or no-shows.
- Ask locally. Neighbours, suburb Facebook groups, your body corporate manager or your property manager often know which locksmiths are reliable.
The OFT also advises researching any provider you find online before you book. That matters because unlicensed operators often change business names and ads to escape bad reviews.
What Type of Locksmith Do You Need in Brisbane?
Most Brisbane locksmiths offer residential, automotive and commercial work, but not every technician carries the tools for every job. A locksmith who handles house lockouts well may not have the programmer needed for a late-model car key. Confirm they do your specific job before you book.
Homeowners
Common jobs include rekeying after moving in, replacing worn locks, and fitting deadbolts or security screens. Rekeying makes every old key stop working without replacing the whole lock. Our page on rekeying and lock repairs explains when to rekey, repair or replace. If you’re upgrading security, look for a locksmith with product knowledge of high-security and smart locks as well as installation skill.
Renters
In Queensland, the property owner or manager must supply and maintain locks and give the tenant a key for each lock. Under the Residential Tenancies Authority’s rules on locks, locks can only be changed by agreement, in an emergency, or by a QCAT order. The exception is a tenant experiencing domestic and family violence, who can change the locks without asking permission.
If you rent, get your property manager’s agreement in writing before booking a lock change.
Car owners
You need a locksmith with key-cutting and coding equipment for your vehicle’s make and model. Ask before they drive out, and confirm they can program transponder keys or remotes on site. Our car key services cover cutting and programming keys, remotes and fobs at your location.
Businesses
Offices, shops and strata buildings often need master-key systems, restricted key profiles or access control. Ask for examples of similar commercial work or a reference from a past client.
After a break-in
You need someone who can secure the property the same day and repair damaged doors so they close and lock properly. Look for a locksmith experienced with break-in repairs who will also work out how the intruder got in, so the weak point can be fixed.
Brisbane locksmith checklist by customer type
| Factor | Homeowner or renter | Car owner | Business owner |
| Typical jobs | Rekeying, lock changes, deadbolts, security screens, safes | Lockouts, key cutting, transponder programming | Commercial locks, master-key systems, access control |
| Licence | Security equipment installer licence for any paid lock work | Same licence required to open a car for payment | Same licence, and the business may need a security firm licence |
| Hours | Business hours for upgrades, 24/7 for lockouts | Often 24/7, since lockouts happen at night | Business hours, plus after-hours support if needed |
| Quote | Fixed price, including any call-out fee | Key, programming and call-out in one price | Project quote with all fees listed |
| Extra check | Renters need landlord agreement first | Confirm they have equipment for your make and model | Ask for commercial references |
Emergency vs Planned Locksmith Work: What’s Different?
In an emergency, you run the same checks with much less time. The licence number and a confirmed price become the two things you never skip.
| Factor | Planned upgrade | Emergency lockout |
| Timeline | Book days or weeks ahead | Immediate, often after hours |
| Quotes | Compare several written quotes | Usually one quote, given by phone |
| Pricing | Business-hours rates | Often higher, with after-hours fees |
| Type of work | High-security locks, rekeying, access control | Non-destructive entry, key cutting |
| Credential checks | Full check of licence, insurance and reviews | Licence number and ID at minimum |
| Location | Choose the best locksmith regardless of distance | A nearby locksmith matters most |
Even under pressure, ask whether their 24/7 service is real. A genuine provider can tell you who is coming and roughly when. If you’re locked out, our page on emergency lockout service explains what to expect from the call to the open door.
How Fast Can a Locksmith Reach You in Brisbane?
A locksmith’s arrival time in Brisbane depends mostly on where they start. According to the TomTom Traffic Index, driving 10 km in Brisbane took an average of 19 minutes and 40 seconds in 2025. In the evening rush hour, the same 10 km took almost 25 minutes, with average rush-hour speeds of 24.5 km/h.
At those rush-hour speeds, a locksmith driving 30 km could take more than an hour to reach you at 5 pm. Greater Brisbane is spread out, from Caboolture and North Lakes in the north to Logan and Jimboomba in the south, Ipswich and Springfield Lakes in the west, and the Redlands and bay islands in the east.
When you call, ask where the technician is coming from and for an arrival window based on current traffic. If you live on the fringe, confirm the business actually services your suburb. Our Brisbane locksmith coverage page lists the suburbs and nearby areas we cover. Through our own lockout work, we’ve found that a locksmith dispatched from nearby can usually arrive within the hour. Sending the customer the technician’s name and arrival window by SMS also helps them confirm the right person turns up.
Does Brisbane’s Climate Affect Which Locks You Need?
Yes, especially for outdoor locks. Brisbane averages 1,056 mm of rain across about 81 rainy days a year, and February alone averages 172 mm, according to Bureau of Meteorology data. The same data shows average 9 am relative humidity of 63% across the year, rising to 66% in February.
In our experience, the locks that fail first in Brisbane are on side gates, garages, sheds and pool fences. Moisture gets into cheap cylinders and they corrode or seize. Bayside homes in areas like Wynnum, Sandgate and the Redlands also deal with salt air.
When choosing a locksmith for external work, ask:
- Which hardware they recommend for outdoor use, such as stainless steel or marine-grade locks
- Whether the lock has a weather rating
- How often external locks should be lubricated or serviced
A locksmith who understands local conditions will raise this without being asked.
Red Flags of a Dodgy Locksmith in Brisbane
Unlicensed locksmiths are an active problem in Queensland. According to the same OFT warning, the OFT ran 21 investigations into locksmiths in a single year, and many of those operators were working without a licence. One case uncovered a ring of unlicensed locksmiths who kept changing their ads to avoid complaints.
Queensland Fair Trading Commissioner Victoria Thomson warned that the biggest concern is giving “unlicensed, unchecked and unscrupulous traders access” to homes, businesses and vehicles.
Watch for these warning signs:
- An advertised call-out fee far below other quotes
- No licence number, ABN or verifiable business address
- A call centre that can’t tell you who is coming or where from
- Refusal to put the price in writing
- Pressure to pay cash upfront before work starts
- Drilling the lock straight away on a standard lockout
- An unmarked vehicle and no licence card on arrival
If you notice two or three of these together, stop the job and call someone else.
What can you do if a locksmith job goes wrong?
Under Australian Consumer Law, services must be delivered with due care and skill and be fit for the purpose you asked for. These consumer guarantees apply automatically. If you can’t resolve the issue with the business, you can lodge a complaint with the Queensland OFT. Under its complaint process, the OFT normally contacts you within 10 working days and aims to resolve most complaints within 30 days. You can also report an unlicensed locksmith to the OFT by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a locksmith need a licence to unlock my car in Queensland?
Yes. Anyone who opens a vehicle for payment in Queensland must hold a security equipment installer licence. This applies to mobile auto locksmiths as well as general locksmiths.
Can I get keys cut in Brisbane without a licensed locksmith?
Yes. Retail key cutting, such as at a shopping centre key counter, is exempt from Queensland’s security licensing rules. Rekeying, changing or repairing locks at your property still requires a licensed locksmith.
Can a tenant change the locks without permission in Queensland?
Generally, no. Queensland tenants can only change locks with the property owner’s agreement, in an emergency, or with a QCAT order. Tenants experiencing domestic and family violence can change the locks without permission.
Can a Brisbane locksmith open my door without damaging the lock?
In most standard lockouts, yes. A trained locksmith uses non-destructive entry methods that leave the lock working. Drilling should be a last resort for high-security or seized locks, and the locksmith should explain why before doing it.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a Brisbane home?
Rekeying is usually enough if the existing locks are in good condition. Rekeying changes which key operates the lock and costs less than full replacement. Replace the locks if they are worn, corroded or below the security level you want.
Is the cheapest locksmith quote in Brisbane the best choice?
Not always. A very low advertised call-out fee is a common sign of bait pricing, where the final bill is much higher. Compare full written quotes from licensed locksmiths, including parts and after-hours fees.
Choosing a Brisbane Locksmith With Confidence
The best time to choose a locksmith is before you need one. Check the licence on the OFT register, ask about training and insurance, read reviews on two platforms, match the specialty to your job, and get the price in writing. Then save the number in your phone so you’re not picking the first paid ad when you’re locked out at night.
